The course treats the IELTS sections—Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing—as inseparable language skills that you will explore in unison.

As such, the program will heavily rely on covering non-IELTS books, movies, and other materials to spur peer discussion and write extensive reflections.

Curriculum Components

Admissions & Liberal Arts Education
In this section, you can expect a comprehensive dive into competitive admissions, liberal arts education, and the trade-offs of the American schooling system.
Philosophy & Political Thought
From Ibn Tufayl to Mahatma Gandhi, this section will introduce you to a wide range of fundamental texts that challenged the "status quo" and captivated thinkers for centuries. By the end of the section, you too will learn to think like a philosopher.
Historical Narratives
What is the past? Why do we need to know it, and can history prepare us for the future? These and many other questions will lie at the core of this section as we stride over a geographically diverse range of historical narratives.
Global Challenges
Before one can find a solution, one must understand the root cause of a problem. In this section, you will learn to investigate the root causes of contemporary challenges including inequality, universal human rights, climate change, and more.

Samvel Davtyan
Lead Teacher

Samvel is a rising junior at NYU Shanghai majoring in Business Marketing and minoring in Chinese language. Aside from his on-campus involvement as an academic peer advisor and residential ambassador at NYU Shanghai, Samvel is also a member of European Youth Parliament in Armenia. He is a TESOL-certified IELTS tutor with an extensive background in teaching academic and general English for more than three years.
Sanjar Umar
IELTS Teacher

Sanjar is a native English speaker and incoming freshman at Babson College, double concentrating in Law and Finance. As president of the Alumni Network, Sanjar has been managing and developing the Alumni Network since May 2023 on top of his e-commerce venture UZMerch, which connects Uzbek artisans to the global market. He graduated from the Freshman Advanced English and Admissions programs in 2022, obtaining an IELTS score of 8.0.
Lana Bastos
IELTS Teacher

Lana is an English teacher specializing in training students to take IELTS and other proficiency exams. She holds CELTA and TKT certificates by the University of Cambridge and has taught English for exams for over a decade, with more than a hundred students achieving their certificates.
